The Middle Glazes – A Study of Mid-Temperature Glazes. ∆6 Glaze Chemistry Masterclass with Matt Katz, Ceramic Materials Workshop, September 2022

£450.00

This course runs from 9.00 – 5.00 pm, Monday 26th – Friday 30th September 2022, inclusive.

The Middle Glazes is a comprehensive study into Mid-Temperature glazes. Also known as Cone 6, these glazes are one of the most popular firing temperatures in ceramics. They can be beautiful, enticing, engaging and incredibly frustrating.

In this workshop we will explore in depth, what we know to make the most out of Mid-Temperature glazes. We will take the mystery of materials, formulas and firings and translate them for real working artists.

The workshop will be led by Matt Katz, who has worked as an Artist and Ceramic Engineer for 25 years. Matt is a co-founder of Ceramic Materials Workshop, an online teaching platform that teaches the ceramics community about glazes and clay. He uses his knowledge of Art and Engineering to make ceramic science understandable and accessible for people of all experience levels.

The course fee includes all materials, face mask, lunch and refreshments. A Tote Goodie bag, containing a note book, pen, a small glaze sieve, a ceramic pencil.

There are no additional or hidden costs.

There is a 20% members discount for this course

Description

Join us, with Matt Katz from Ceramic Materials Workshop, for a 5 day spectacular on glaze chemistry, which will include glaze experiments.

This course was first envisioned as a three day Masterclass, from Friday 5 June – Sunday 7 June 2020.

Well, we all know what happened.

Now, we joyously welcome Matt Katz, from The Ceramic Materials Workshop, back to the UK, to set up his travelling chemistry lab, in our beautiful basement studios in Moseley School of Art.

FOR FIVE WHOLE DAYS!

See picture below for future orientation.

Moseley School of Art, Birmingham by Sam Mellish.

This course runs from the 26th – 30th September 2022

Time 9.00 am – 5.00 pm.

During the workshop we will discuss and examine why glazes work. We will also debunk some glaze myths!

We’ll cover:

* glaze mixing

* an overview of the different materials used in glazes

* glaze chemistry (no previous knowledge required)

* experiments, including glaze firings

* evaluating why glazes go wrong and how to improve them.

Our glazes will be fired at Cone (∆ 6) (around 1220°C), with room for variation.

Once you’ve learnt glaze chemistry, you can adjust your glazes for your own personal firings.

During the class, you will make test glazes that you get to take home with you, as well as a ceramic pencil (handy for marking your test tiles).

The course fee includes all materials, face mask, lunch and refreshments. A Tote Goodie bag, containing a note book, pen, a small glaze sieve, a ceramic pencil.

There are no additional or hidden costs.
